FreeCAD Geometry, heat-transfer, Tesla Batteries 4680


The following tutorial shows a simple air-heat-exchanger with Tesla's 4680 batteries which are operating and heated with 100W per cell (in total 2000W). The geometry was created with FreeCAD by Aleksander Sodawski while OpenFOAM® was used to create a numerical investigation. The conditions used within the case are arbitrary and do not represent a full realistic case setup. However, within the case files one will find interesting comments which one might not be aware of.

The case does have a residual control but that would not be hit due to fluctuations and high relaxation factors. A better way for monitoring the convergence in such cases could be done by evaluating quantities at different locations (probes). While using the ESI-OpenCFD version, one could also make use of the runTimeControl functionObject. The tutorial is dedicated to Tiziano Maffei who is supporting my work since a few years.

The available OpenFOAM® training cases are tested and built for different OpenFOAM® versions (not distributions) on a Linux machine. During the tests, only the OpenFOAM Foundation version of OpenFOAM® was used. Furthermore, the following software packages are required for most of the training cases: Salome®, ParaView®, and for optimization tasks, one also needs the open-source software DAKOTA®. The OpenFOAM® cases might work with the ESI version of OpenFOAM® but it is not supported. For the OpenFOAM® extend project, the training cases will probably not work as the code diverged too much. Additionally, there is no support for Windows-based and MAC-based OpenFOAM® versions.
